In 2017, Cherry created a Kickstarter campaign for a short animated film called Hair Love. The film is about an African American dad who is attempting to style his young daughter Zuri's hair for the first time. The campaign surpassed its initial goal of $75,000 and raised over $300,000.

To create a world where natural hair is a source of confidence in young people. In less than seven minutes, the short film brings awareness to hair diversity and illustrates how defining hair can be on the path to self-love. Three years later, Hair Love won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.

Both main characters, Dad and 5 year old Zuri, learn to help each other through challenges presented when their regular routines are interrupted. They must learn to communicate and support each other through the very real and stressful challenges of everyday life.

Zuri's mom Angela is off her game for a good reason: she's stepping back into the world after recovering from cancer treatments. And that wonderful combination of cute kid and struggling parents is what distinguishes Young Love, which is a new series on Max spun out of an Oscar-winning short film.
